Article 16 of the New York City Civil Court Act authorizes the Mayor of the City of New York to appoint up to 83 city marshals to serve as enforcement officers of the Civil Court. Candidates applying for appointment to the office of city marshal are evaluated by the Mayor's Committee on City Marshals, and their backgrounds are thoroughly checked by the New York City Department of Investigation.

The City Marshal enforces all judgments of the New York City Civil Court, and money judgments of the New York State Supreme Court and New York State Family Court. The Marshal's authority extends throughout the five boroughs of the City of New York.
