The New York City Civil Court issues Orders of Seizures on behalf of utility companies to reclaim utility meters when payment for utility services has not been made.

This means that if you do not pay your electric or gas bill, a City Marshal may be authorized to break and enter into your premises and remove the utility meter.

Remember that the meter is the property of the utility company, and to avoid its removal you must contact the utility provider and arrange for prompt payment when a delinquency occurs.

Should you receive correspondence from the Marshal's Office that the removal of the utility meter has been scheduled, you MUST contact the appropriate utility and make a payment arrangement in order to avoid the enforcement of the Order of Seizure.
